Questions

Short answers, and for anything else, write to us.

Twelve questions about the award.

  • When does it open?

The first season is Spring 2027. Join the list and we will write to you when entries open and when the theme is announced.

  • What does it cost?

€25 per series, the same for everyone. Up to three series per season, at the same price each.

  • Do I have to be a professional?

No. It is open to all levels, and there are no professional or amateur divisions. The pillars are the same for everyone, and judging is anonymised until the podium is fixed.

  • Can I enter work I have already published?

Yes. The work does not need to be unpublished, and there is no exclusivity. You keep full copyright.

  • Can I enter more than one series?

Up to three per season, each at €25 per series. Send a second series only if it is really another idea: no image may appear in more than one series, and work that does not hold together fails the pillars, however many you send.

  • Can I change my series after I pay?

No. You can change everything until you pay. Once paid, your series is entered and final: its frames, their order, the title and the statement stay as they are.

  • Do the three photos have to be shot together?

No. They can come from one afternoon or from three years. What matters is that they read as one work: a shared visual language, one idea explored from different angles, and an order that would lose something if you changed it.

  • What does the feedback look like?

Written notes on your series against the five dimensions and the remove-one test: where the thread held, where the idea repeated instead of developing, and whether the order works. A juror writes every response. It is a reason to enter even if you do not win a prize.

  • Who reads my series?

Three jurors: two standing seats and a guest seat that changes every season. The panel is published in full when entries open, before you pay anything.

  • Can I use AI?

Not to make or change what is in the picture. Normal editing is fine: exposure, colour, contrast, cropping, black and white, removing dust. A photograph made or composited with AI is disqualified.

  • How is a prize paid, and what about tax?

We pay the full prize in euro within 30 days of receiving your payout details, by bank transfer, PayPal or Wise. Any tax on a prize is yours to handle where you pay tax.

  • Do I need to have raced with UPR?

No. The award is online and open to anyone, anywhere. The race and the award share the same pillars, but you do not need one to enter the other, and the fee is the same either way.

Your rights. The short version, in plain sentences.

  • You keep full copyright, always.

  • UPR gets a non-exclusive licence to show the work in connection with the prize, with credit, for two years.

  • No commercial or client use, no sublicensing, no exclusivity.

  • No requirement that the work be unpublished elsewhere.

  • Shortlisted entrants can withdraw before publication.

  • Do you want to judge?

One seat on every panel is a guest seat for one season. We invite working photographers, editors, curators and teachers who read pictures closely. The seat has a defined number of hours inside a set window, and we tell you the hours and the dates before you agree.
