UPR ROTTERDAM 2018
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DID IT!
Thank you everyone who joined our second edition of the UPR ROTTERDAM. We had a lot of fun organising it and we hope you did too participating in it. By the end of the day we saw many tired but smiling faces, and that's always a sign that we did our job well.
We hope you found the themes challenging enough and that you got to explore not only some new photography but also a chance to look at the city in a different way. We know that the first time is always more complicated and stressful, but we still hope you had a great time, that you had the chance to meet other photographers, learn and share your experiences.
These were the 2018 themes:
T1 - Metamorphosis
T2 - You will never walk alone
T3 - Immersion
T4 - Urban Sport
T5 - Street Art
T6 - At your Service
As you can imagine, it takes some effort to organise such a day and we couldn't do it without the help of our local team as well as the support of our sponsors. We would like to thank all of our partners who support us into making such an event as well as a special thank you to Fotofestival aan de Maas for offering us a container at their festival as well as to The Student Hotel for allowing us to invade their location for our last checkpoint. Also, we owe a great deal of our success to the local team, who made themselves available beyond expectations to get this done for you. To them, Iwona Montel, Arjan Boerlage and Jessica Boerlage a big thank you!
I leave you with some snapshots of the day and below the Winners photo galleries, enjoy browsing through them, get inspired and see you all next year.
URBAN PHOTO RACE
JURY RTD
Our 2018 jury is handpicked for their keen eye and individual photographic background, they will go at your photos from all angles.
Our jury elements are a very photography active bunch, they are photographers, educators, gear geeks… you have it all! Please check out their work and learn more about them.
Fokko Muller
He is a Dutch photographer and educator with a special interest in street photography.
" Street photography changed my way of looking into the world. I like being on the streets, seeing the interaction between people and hearing the fragments of their conversations. I enjoy showing people in their daily environment. I like you to take a closer look and wonder what is happening. Sometimes I want to make you smile. My photos are always made with respect for the subject.
I teach street photography workshops, I give lectures on street photography and I published my photo book "The Street". The best thing about street photography is that you walk out the door and never know what you bring home in your camera."
Ruud Visschedijk
He has been the director of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam since it was founded in 2003.
He has enjoyed being part of many juries in all those years and is looking forward to the entries for the Urban Photo Race Rotterdam. (Photo by Fred Ernst)

His photography focuses primarily on photographing people, these can be festive or special circumstances, but also everyday situations. His work has been regularly published in photo and neighborhood newspapers and has participated on various solo and group exhibitions.
Thamar Kiemel
To me, photography is a creative outlet that is very accessible to almost anyone. It lets you explore and look at things differently. I am a designer and creating makes me happy and fulfilled. So I wanted to share that experience with others and started a community that had monthly themed meetups. It began in 2006 even before social media connected us all, and over the years the collective had ten cities around the world, 1500 active photographers and 26 volunteers. Ten years after I felt my job was done.
Currently, I am working on other photography projects & platforms that are soon to see daylight. As user experience designer one of my tasks is to observe people, this translates back into my own photography which is mainly street and urban.
I got my first camera on my 12th birthday and loved my photography lessons during design school, I photograph for over 30 years now, and I still like to grab one of my analogue cams now and then.
